Lonaconing suffered a major fire in its business district in Sepember 1881. As a result, the Lonaconing Fire Company was organized in April 1882 with a hand pumper named "Minnehaha" and several hose reels serving as the first fire apparatus. In 1883, the first station was built, and in 1906, the organization changed its name to Good Will Fire Company No. 1.
